Dedicated Learning - Roy Hodgson

Roy Hodgson believes that aspiring coaches should never stop looking to learn and develop their skills.

Whether in training or during competitive matches, the England manager believes that every football experience can offer a variety of unique opportunities for further development.

Hodgson, speaking at last December's Licensed Coaches' Club conference said: “If you are a football coach you should always be trying to learn really.

“Every training session that you do can be a learning curve for you because you are learning from the players, you are learning from mistakes, you are learning from what you see on the field."

“Sometimes players can do things that you have not thought about, so I think every training session is a learning session for you.”

A renowned scholar of the game, Hodgson, who has coached in 8 different countries, is also supportive of structured educational opportunities and was keen to stress how events such as The FA Licensed Coaches’ Club Conference provide the opportune environment for coaches to learn off one another.

“Coming to these courses it can only be beneficial because not only can you meet other people but you listen to other people talking and see other people working,” he continued.

“You learn a lot from your colleagues and the other people on the course.

“When you are discussing your problems and discussing your views on football they are bouncing ideas back to you and as a result you are picking things up.”
